"BOOM" premiering at the Singapore International Film Festival 2022

We’re happy to announce that BOOM, an independent feature film that CheeWei recently scored for, is an Official Selection at the upcoming Singapore International Film Festival under the Singapore Panorama Section. 

BOOM is a poignant film adaptation of playwright Jean Tay’s biting critique of relentless progress.

"Not Your Average Neighbour" picks up 2 awards at the 10th Toronto Indie Shorts festival


CheeWei's short documentary “Not Your Average Neighbour”, picked up the “Best Documentary” and “Best Edit” awards at the 10th Toronto Indie Shorts Festival.

The festival mainly focuses on arthouse narrative, experimental, animation and documentaries from international and Canadian talents.

The festival was created by a team of Canadian directors, producers, critics and film scholars from York University of Toronto.

The mission of the festival is to recognize and promote short films through the Toronto Indie Shorts. 

CheeWei's Short film "Not Your Average Neighbour" picks up 2 awards at the World Film Carnival

CheeWei's short documentary “Not Your Average Neighbour”, collected the “Outstanding Achievement Award” in the “Best Film Score” and “Best Documentary Film” categories at the recent World Film Carnival.

"Not Your Average Neighbour" explores the controversial world of graffiti and street art told through the perspective of Steve, a Melbournian street artist and a personal friend of CheeWei’s.

Steve shares his personal story of finding a place in the underground scene where public perception shifts between visual artistry and vandalism.

The win came as a total surprise to CheeWei and his team as Singapore being the host country of the festival, has strict laws treating underground street art as a criminal activity, which leads to massive fines or imprisonment not exceeding three years, and also mandatory corporal punishment of not less than three strokes and not more than eight strokes of the cane.

NOVA - Black Hole Apocalypse nominated for "Original Music Score" at the New York TV & Film Festival

CheeWei's score for NOVA - BLACK HOLE APOCALYPSE has just been nominated as a Finalist in the ORIGINAL MUSIC SCORE category of the New York TV & Film Festivals!

In this two-hour special, astrophysicist and author Janna Levin takes viewers on a journey to the frontiers of black hole science. Along the way, we meet leading astronomers and physicists on the verge of finding new answers to provocative questions about these shadowy monsters: Where do they come from? What’s inside? What happens if you fall into one? And what can they tell us about the nature of space, time, and gravity?

BLACK HOLE APOCALYPSE is also been nominated a Finalist in the “SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY” category of the New York TV and Film Festival!

51st Houston Worldfest Remi Award Nominations for De Claffer Music / CheeWei TAY

It seems like the awards season for 2018 has begun for CheeWei!

The first batch of Houston International Film Festival nominations have been announced! This year, at least four titles that De Claffer Music worked on have been nominated for Remi awards, including some that are also nominated in the ‘Best Music Score’ Categories – Route Awakening (Series 3), Route Awakening Trailer (Series 3), NOVA: Treasures of the Earth – Gems and My Mother’s Story.

“Route Awakening (series 3)” and Route Awakening Trailer (Series 3) are broadcast documentary series produced by Sitting In Pictures (Singapore) for National Geographic Channel.

“Treasures of the Earth – Gems” is part of the longest running American Science Television Series NOVA, produced / directed by Doug Hamilton for WGBH Boston/PBS

“My Mother’s Story” is a Autobiographical series produced by The Moving Visuals Co. for Mediacorp (Singapore).

CheeWei provided the music score for all the nominated titles!

The Worldfest Houston International Film Festival is one of the oldest and largest film competitions in the world, with more than 4,500 entries received. It is renowned for discovering the likes of Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Ang Lee and David Lynch by giving them their first honours.

The 51st Worldfest Houston International Film Festival will be held 20th April – 29th April 2018.The results and category of awards will be announced at the Awards Gala Presentation on 29th April 2018. For more information, click here

Remi Award Nominations for CheeWei TAY

The 50th Worldfest Houston International Film Festival nominations have been announced! This year, Six titles that CheeWei  worked on have been nominated for Remi awards! – Route Awakening (Series 2), NOVA: Life’s Rocky Start, Gok’s Chinese Takeaway, The Rescue, Alena and Gizmo and This is Rowdy Girl Sanctuary.

“The Rescue”, ”Alena & Gizmo” and “This is Rowdy Girl Sanctuary” are a series of short films that marks CheeWei TAY’s official debut in a production and directorial roles. CheeWei collaborated with Australian cinematographer & editor Alana Tompson from Black Ant Films on this production, which was filmed entirely in Angleton, Texas.

Chee Wei TAY receives Top Local Soundtrack at the 21st COMPASS Music Awards Presentation

Chee Wei received one of the top awards at the prestigious 21st COMPASS (Composers and Authors Society of Singapore) awards presentation. The Singapore-born film score composer received the “Top Soundtrack” award for his score on Animal Planet’s “Mekong – Soul of a River”, a four-part documentary series that explores the people and wildlife that depend upon Asia's most enigmatic river for their survival.

This is not the first time Chee Wei has received the COMPASS awards. In 2013, he received the COMPASS – “Wings of Excellence” award for his outstanding overseas achievements in music. In 2010, He received the “COMPASS Young Composer of the Year” and “Top soundtrack” awards for his work on PBS’ (American television) documentary, “NOVA : Ocean Animal Emergency”.

The annual COMPASS Awards recognizes achievements in the Singapore music industry. Awards are given to outstanding individuals who have excelled in the various music genres.

Chee Wei TAY awarded at the 49th WorldFest Houston International Film Festival

Chee Wei TAY was awarded the Gold Remi Award for the “Best Music Score” for his work on the feature film, “Bring Back the Dead”, making him the sole winner for that category at the Worldfest Houston yesterday.

This is the second consecutive year in which Chee Wei received a Remi award for his music scores.

“Bring Back the Dead” also won the Platinum Remi Award in the “Best Fantasy / Horror Film”

Additionally, Chee Wei represented several other titles that were awarded at Worldfest Houston, having composed the music score and headed the sound post-production for the following winning titles:

Platinum Remi Award(Informational/Cultural/Historical program - Series) - Singapore Archipelago
Gold Remi Award(Informational / Cultural / Historical program - Series) - Route Awakening
Gold Remi Award(TV series) - Zero Calling Season 2

Chee Wei would like to extend his thanks and appreciation to the production teams of the above award-winning titles for the opportunities to compose the music score for the programs.

The WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival is one of the three original international film festivals in North America and is the oldest independent film festival in the USA. There was a record number of over 4500 entries from over 70 countries in this year’s edition of Worldfest.

WorldFest gave first honors to Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Ang Lee, Ridley Scott, The Coen Brothers, David Lynch, Ridley Scott, Oliver Stone, John Lee Hancock, John Frankenheimer,, Daniele Gangemi, Francis Ford Coppola, and many more.

Speaking after the awards Chee Wei said: “I know it’s been said before but events like this show again just how music transcends language, people, places and other divisions between us. When I saw the people at Worldfest Houston found the films so obviously enjoyable and thought provoking, even when it is not presented in their native language, it just reinforced for me how important a good music really score is to all of us so I really have to salute the efforts of our crew of talented musicians and sound engineers."
